Chief Heckawee's Spiritual Journey to His Youth

The Chief rolled out of camp a bit late but caught a break with a tailwind that kept him steady in the big ring and 1Zing north to a Best Western somewhere he never thought he'd be. Heckawee Brave danced into the night rejoicing knowing the Chief was somewhere with a 6-pack and a bottle and plenty of happytimes. Though he'll never get to Champaign.

Turns out he's not trying to get to Champaign. Till tomorrow. So the Chief remains happy on day 2 of his spiritual journey to his youth even though the winds have shifted bringing a pleasing cool and crispy 9-mph headwind. He's trucking on though with 1Z in mouth and his hands on the bars.
Heckawee Brave wish they could find their youth along side the Chief. Sorta-sad-but-happytimes for the Brave. Keep on truckin', Chief!

Meantime, Guapo and Chump are headed off to McMinnville in hopes of channeling Coach's Tennessee form...

The temps for the 2010 edition started in fifties and finished near 70, a beautiful day for suffering in the middle of nowhere Louisiana/Mississippi. The course turned out to be 3 miles shorter this year making it even 100 miles. The first section of gravel was as loose and sandy as the year before, and it was every bit of an all out 7-mile effort: cross race within a long road race. The long road section before Block House Hill was fairly breezy. This is where the Chump unfortunately flatted out of the main group. He managed to catch back on to the back of another chase group in order to finish the day. Block House Hill was all but the same if you don't count the ten yards of deep sand. El Guapo made a respectable attempt to get through this section but even he had to dismount after falling over on his ass. Good old Tunica Trace had some freshly laid gravel for the hardest climb. El Guapo dropped his group at this section, which included a familiar Big Shark lady that had snubbed his hello earlier in the day. Unfortunately, El Guapo busted his shifter on the trace and would have to finish the race in his little ring from there. Poor kid. Even with the 20 mile spin back to town, he placed well.

Behold the Heckawee Team Bike for the 2010 road and crit season. Team mechanic Choak built this steel beauty for the racing style and comforts of Chief Heckawee. Chief is comfortable on this stock 54cm Soma.
The name "Smoothie" is not for his abilities with the ladies but rather his work with fruit.
The white frame is meant to give the impression this testosterone-filled mad-racer is riding clean.
With a mix of Shimano and Sram Rival the Chief is racing with a clear advantage.
The 12-28 cassette enables the Chief to spin nicely up normally painful rollers yet hold a wheel when the racing gets down to it.

Froze Toes 2010

Which one of these is not like the others?

In a surprising turn of events, the Mystery Machine pointed west early yesterday and brought Chief, Guapo, and Chump to of all places: a road race. But not just any road race: Froze Toes! The stupid, windy, cold, too-far-to-drive, crashfest race where all the area roadies start their season's gamefacing shenanigans of trying to drop you at registration with a quick gay-bar stare. If that doesn't work and you're still on their wheel, they'll try in the public grade school's shitter while squeezing out their nervous bowel syndrome of granola and whole-wheat garlic pasta. Neither worked on Heckawee and Heckawee in fact had a pretty damn good time out there at that horrible race.

Chump raced the P,1,2,3s and held on for dear life in a heavy wind as the group put in a monster effort to chase done the leaders that got away to start lap 2. In the end, he got what he came for and finished in the group.

Chief put in a stellar effort in the Masters which included pulling the group along finished with the group.

The Chief has reported a big Saturday for Heckawee! Heckawee was split all over the great lands doing only what Heckawee does best. First, the most important news is that Grand Puba Molteni is now not only a chick magnet in lycra but also a chick magnet in baggie shorts: he's the proud owner of a Fisher 29er, brahs! Congrats, Molteni, now cancel your hair appointments and get damn thing dirty for jesus-fucks sake.

A big Heckawee chant goes out to D Mull for acquiring a Lightspeed MTB to punish anyone looking for a fight.

The Chief had to drive his lovely valentine, Nurse Shirley, to St. Louis so that she could escape for some of Nurse-Shirley-Training-Camp time in the desert. So the Chief, being the good happytimes Chief that he is, skips an afternoon at Larry Flynt's and opts to triplelyze the snowy Katy Trail in search of eight dollar glasses of chambourcin. All reports indicate this was a success!

Working stiffs, Guapo & Chump, woke up (in their separate residences), had coffee (different blends in different kitchens), and buckshotted straight up to Jerusalem and into the snowy Pine Hills and on over for a Dixie sandwich... And back home the lonely road fueled on on bood-light dreams.

And the best news of all: Coach is most definitely back into his routines and will represent the Cleveland Browns well in LA as the first member of the LA Browns fanclub and cyclocross racer. Go Browns. Go Coach.

That goes for those of you secretly building up your classic steel frame you stole off ebay and now got stashed out in the barn with your old porn and rolling papers--Bling that motherfucking slut up!

With the announcement that Louisville will host the 2013 World Cyclocross Championships came the announcement that it will also host the 2012 Masters World Championships, and Heckawee discovered its purpose all these years has not been to discover all the regional native hieroglyphics and dirt roads but to race the Masters World Cyclocross Championships. For a moment the smoke had cleared and the pipes were cashed and Heckawee recognized where they were at. To be expected, this felt weird. Like miles-of-soft-dirt-to-smooth-asphalt weird. The pipes were repacked and lighters flicked and the went to Jackoff's to rethink everything.

Thus far Heckawee has been enjoying sub-zero temperatures in the saddles of their mountain bikes along the trails of Cedar Lake and trespasses of Trail of Tears forest. A slight scare happened last night when the Chief thought he was going to have to put Guapo on his shoulder and haul him and two bikes out of the forest after Guapo had torn his rear derailleur off his bike. Good news: Chief realized Guapo could walk. Bad news: no word on the whereabouts of Guapo or Molteni.

Heckawee also sent a scouting mission to Rio de Janeiro to explore the possibilities of setting up a Heckawee base camp there. The results of this mission have been mostly positive with a number of complexities. First off, the roads are not safe for bicycles. Period. Crazy Brazilians, whether behind the wheels of city buses, VW buses, taxis, or Fiat's powered by natural gas, believe holding a steering wheel automatically gives them Emerson Fittipaldi status and drive as such no matter if they're in a dark tunnel, open road, or up a winding mountain road. So since Heckawee likes dirt, this is very positive. Heckawee will ride the trails, but be prepared to get the heart rate up in the forests near Rio. If the trail is flat enough to ride easy, look out for men with guns, because it's probably part of a favela. If the trail is more remote, it'll likely be going straight up or straight down. It'll be good for cyclocross training.

First thing Heckawee will notice about Rio, even before they watch the toilet water drain counter clockwise, is the seasons are reversed. So this will be good for Heckawee to setup it's Summer cyclocross training camp in Rio during Winter. Though some of Heckawee may not like the Winter beach weather in Rio, they will adjust quickly to the 60 and 70 degree temps. During Summer in Rio, you're crazy to be in the woods on a bike. Get off it and go to the beach, have a beer, and have a look around, dumbfuck.

Heckawee will like the diet as the only commonly seen vegetable served is black beans cooked with various hams. Mangos and papayas are as available as the fresh coconut water sold on every street corner. And the quest to find the perfect pineapple gives you ample opportunities to eat many excellent pineapples. Cafezinhos, or espresso, are served throughout the day, everywhere. For the main course, most are served family style so here's a picture of two dishes meant to serve two:

So as long as the Chief can locate some greens to keep himself regular, Heckawee bellies will have happytimes.

As for beverages, there is Brazilian wine, but under no circumstances should any Heckawee drink it. There are many options for bood light though, as Brazilian beer companies, like Skol and Antarctica, have perfected the bood light recipe and put it into cans, both tall and short, that are sold to you for about a dollar anywhere you breathe air in public. And for a sugary nightcap or morning kickstart, caipirinhas are a excellent choice.

So Heckawee is making plans for its Summer/Winter cyclocross training camp this July. See you all there. Don't forget your Speedo.

Immunity to Shiftyness

Last two days were gorgeous with a brisk southern wind that pushed temps up to 55. Happy times. At about 5:45 last evening, the wind pushed from the north and today keeps pushing, holding temps steady at 31. With less than a week till the shortest day of the year, which will also signal the start of longer days again, Heckawee looks to ward off any unfriendly viruses. Already this fall, Heckawee has had 3 cases of the Swine Flu or Yellow Fever or something. ROY Will, Guapo, and the Professor all fell to nasty cases that kept them from sharing their peace pipes for weeks. Recent reports have it that the Professor is still quarantined and has sent out for Big Dale to deliver a few bottles Cave Creek. Let's hope the Professor can pull through this before Jackoffs is out of business. So even Heckawee needs to be reminded this time of year to take care of their health. Cyclingnews borrowed and published old Heckawee immunity boosting techniques like eating Magic Mushrooms and growing your own herbs (#9 & #15), both of which have kept Heckawee exploring gravel roads all the cold seasons to date. Remember to embrace these techniques and be careful of any slimy-redneck-pig-fuckers.

As would be expected, there was no shortage excellent fare. The main course a whole pork shoulder with two sauce choices:This was also a nominee for Heckawee BBQ of the Year from Mitchell's BBQ in Tamms. Most Heckawee made sandwiches on Big Tom's Homeade Hot Buns:For sides there was feijoada: With a nice helping of collard greens or Big Tom's Homeade Baked Beans: And don't forget the tamales: And for desert Guapo delivered some warm amish pies (apple and pecan) and vanilla ice cream (not pictured): The vino went quick: After dinner, Heckawee was polled for the year-end awards.

The year-end pow-wow is set for this Friday at President Molteni's house from 7 to whenever Molteni says it's time to go. No word yet if everyone will be allowed to enter the home or if we'll hang out in the driveway. This will be a bring-your-own-beverage affair. Good Heckawee brave will also bring a dish to share with fellow Heckawee. The Chief is also volunteering his time to pick up some local southern bbq pork, which should make everyone happy. There will also be inspirational cookies that Guapo will be sampling. Yes, Guapo has been found alive and semi-conscious after a long journey took him somewhere. Awards will be presented, which will include but not be limited to:

Rookie of the Year (Men's & Women's),
Epic Ride of the Year,
Most Improved,
New BBQ of the Year,
Silo-Stop of the Year,
& Most Valuable Heckawee.

Storming State Champs & Chopping Beef!

No, Heckawee did not return with any State Championship belts this year. Their presence was felt in the Masters 30+, 50+, and 4B races. The course suited the fast and technically skilled as despite the mostly frozen dry terrain, racers were regularly falling on their asses. Chief & Dave both finished 12th in their races and were as prepared as they could have been in the 33-degree and breezy lakefront course. Their performance came after the Chief had an unfortunate misshap with the waffle maker in the morning and had to go with the French toast sticks. No worries though, gamefaces were on. Gary finished a strong 40th--no word yet if he had any Polish Sausage handups in the sand.

So out beyond the Rockies on the Pacific, Coach Magnuson pinned on a number and proved that his time away has been good to him--8th place! Congratulations! He will be racing and recruiting more Heckawee on December 20th. Apparently, cyclocross season never ends in southern California due to the seasons never changing! Heckawee finds this to be an ideal match for the Coach as he never enjoyed the falling leaves or budding trees.

Heckawee still waits for pictures of the Coach in kit so here is another from the state champs:Beef chopping. Three Sox fans went searching for beef sandwiches in Wrigleyville after the State Champs and found a promising location that suited their tastes and desires. They found that looks can be deceiving, especially in Wrigleyville, and what looks to be a good lineup may not make it to June. This beef certainly looks good in the field:But not in jeans. In Wrigleyville, appearances are deceptive. But the fries are alright:

The Chief is cleansed and has been dreaming clearly beneath the light of the full moon about how someone can urinate from lemon juice than from a case of bood light silos. Heckawee brave think Chief should go back to inspiration. As Heckawee readys for State, they think about base layers, snoring drugs, stadium horns, cowbells, and the chicken marsala at the Olive Garden. Oh, the pageantry. Too bad it's gotta be an out and back. The Mystery Machine will be in a drive thru for beef sandwhiches before the protest period ends.

Molteni's out. Gary's in but pondering the circus of the race he's registered for.

No snow or rain is in the forecast though the temps should be hovering around the freezing mark. So Heckawee wonders whether to build a fire inside the Mystery Machine or if electric ice fishing socks really work. It's eerily quiet. It's serious: The Professor had to share a bottle with the founder, Mullison. Gameface is on.

Night riding, State Cross, & Year-End Awards Pow-wow

Due to the likelihood of cowboy rednecks hunting deer into the night, the thursday night ride is gonna stick to the roads less traveled.

The Mystery Machine is departing for an overnight out and back to the state champ race this weekend. So far Heckawee should be represented in at least 3 categories. The Coach is still confirming he'll be pinning up the western Heckawee for the first time in two seasons. Sprinkle some dust in your peace pipe and the ash on oatmeal for his good luck and healthy result. The state race is the Heckawee Nationals this year and word is that the Chief turned to the Master Cleanse this week--let's hope the spirits protect Nurse Shirley. Washboard Dave has been frying baked cod while Molteni is on strict diet of Mary Lou's biscuits and gravy. Gary is eating glass and tile. Guapo is MIA after chasing the wild horses.

Your character is built hours from home with no radar to tell you there's no end to the rain in sight, only Speedmax and Mr. Tuffy and two extra tubes protecting you from a bad day, gloves so wet you'll wring them out if you can manage to make it to Jackoff's with a enough time for two bottles and daylight to get home, a Bic lighter in your pocket so drenched you wouldn't be able to spark a fire for days (if you wanted to), and warm faucet water running over your discolored pinkie finger giving you an instant moment of relief. The character is your attitude. The attitude not to whine and cry about being soaked on your day out. The attitude to not try to hurt yourself or your buddies in order to get home a little bit sooner. Really, a sign of good character building is to wait until the ride is over to make fun of your buddy (Molteni) for soiling his bibshorts somewhere while going up Rhine Road. Jesus, dude, that wasn't sand. Take a pill for that.

Somehow, it's been months since Heckawee has updated its adventures, yet Heckawee, as usual, has not wavered it its traditions despite rainy days, broken clavicles, more bad batches of Cave Creek, many good batches of inspirations, and inspirations from south of the equator.

Tales of the 1 lb Supermax bbq sandwiches and the men who ate them will be told as will the tales of the men who did not eat them--these men have since handed their peace pipes over to proper authorities. So too will come the tales of the Professor's love affair with a busload of wine trail enthusiasts and Will's meatballs.

Rumors are circulating via Heckawee shaman that the Coach, Mike Magnuson, will be showing up to race this weekend. Stay tuned...

After fueling up at the Kwikery in Platteville, Heckawee were led to a new settlement of women in Lancaster, WI. They could not stay as Coach had them on strict schedule.

But the day was too beautiful and the climbs too long and the views too inspiring to stay on track. They traveled in the wrong direction and GPS took over to get them back to Mount Hope in time to meet 60 bikers at a friendly establishment.

Heckawee Elders were summoned to meet in the settlement of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, to explore new routes.

They found the terrain to be fertile and filled with friendly tribes serving fresh moldy cheese and sausage with a array of beers to select. They also found this place to be a pain in the ass to travel around in.

Ah, but they didn't always have stinky wine and cheese and sausage. Sometimes they drank Old Milwaukee and cheeseburgers and wrinkly fries. The elder woman drank Old Style.

And at the Terrace, beverages were refreshing as the Chief described his thoughts on settling north of the humidity line.

Heckawee Nurse diagnosed Dave with stupidity and a friction burn on the palm of his hand from sliding across pavement during the O'Fallon Grand Prix.

After a few days of discomfort and growth of fluids, an old world surgery took place with a chianti sedatement. First Heckawee Nurse marinated and sucked puss from the blister:

Heckawee Nation of So Illers was rocked on May 8th by spirits from the west, knocking over and out trees and other luxuries throughout the region. They hit Molteni hardest but his will remains strong like his climbing. A lesson Heckawee learned is El Guapo is only as reliable as his chainsaw bar is wide.
Witnesses claim he can sure haul sticks though. Here's to more inspiring moments brought to us by El Guapi!

Oh, and one lazy do-nothing left the region and the work to be done to meet with the Ozarks. He brought back seconds but really got third.

The Chief led Heckawee on a tour of Saint Louis to celebrate another year. The celebration was without pain and smiles. Everyone got a chance to feel the spirit of Saint Louis in the form of a 30 mph headwind along the bottoms of a TT.

Nearing the end of the Chief's day in the sun, the Professor was found at El Guapo's bachelor party toasting $3.25 Bood Lights at the Broadway Oyster bar, a mere couple miles from where Bood Light is born.

Spirited and fresh, Molteni set off on a journey of exploration. A trip with running that would leave him beaten and new.

After two weekends of intense racing and calorie counting to ensure top race performance, Heckawee set off on a ride of epic proportions. Here they are contemplating dinner while the Chief explains how to be one with the bison:

Getting home was no problem for Heckawee. Guapo complained of puking not bonking, which is the Heckawee way. A day in the Kerr is not complete without Bison.

Heckawee works well on the open road in between gravel sections of the Rouge Roubaix. Not sure if these were taken while Heckawee was on attack or chasing back to the front of the race after a much needed stop for inspiration.
